In Yale New Haven Hospital, Tuesday, February 18, 2014, Peggy Barnes, 80, of Long Hill Rd, Guilford. Beloved wife of William M. Barnes. Born on January 31, 1934 in Newark, New Jersey, daughter of the late Jack and Marie Stiles. Sister of Judith Strayer-Simmons and brother-in-law Herb Simmons of San Diego, CA. Loving mother of Debra Marie Barnes of Guilford, Pamela Monaco and her husband David of Guilford, Georgeanne Barnes-Keirstead and her husband Steven of Madison, William Barnes II and his wife Janice of Raleigh, NC, and Amanda Barnes of Guilford. Also survived by eight beautiful grandchildren, Jessee, Brittany, Elizabeth, Caity, Willy, Kassidy, Sofie and Izzie.
During Peggys long happy life, she raised her family with love and devotion. One of her greatest passions, one she shared with her husband Bill and all her kids participated in, was gardening. She started The North Guilford Herb Shop on the Guilford green and a General Store and Tea Room in Branford. She was a long time member of the North Guilford Congregational Church where her faith and her friends there brought her happiness for so many years. During the annual Church Fair you could always find her running the White Elephant Sale. Peggy spent countless hours volunteering her time at the Dudley Farm and helping to write and publish a book about the history of North Guilford called Voices of North Guilford. She was a proud, generous and kind woman, and an even more amazing grandmother who loved to read to her grandchildren and constantly remind them how very proud she was of each and every one of them.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the North Guilford Congregational Church, 159 Ledge Hill Rd, Guilford. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peggys memory may be made to North Guilford Congregational Church, 159 Ledge Hill Rd, Guilford or The Dudley Farm Museum, 2351 Durham Rd, Guilford, CT 06437.
