James Clifford, 94 of Madison CT, beloved husband of the late Marie Clifford, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 23, 2013. He was born on December 12, 1918 in New Haven, Ct to Patrick and Mary (Sullivan) Clifford. He leaves four well-loved children: William Clifford and his wife Jaclynn of Norfolk, VA.; Judge Patrick Clifford and his wife Susan of Madison, Ct; Nancy and her husband Robert Haney of Clinton, Ct and the Republic of Panama; and Mary Johnson of Madison. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Mary Ostrander of Canton, Ohio, and his brothers John Clifford of Branford, CT and Daniel Clifford of Milford, CT. He was predeceased by his sisters Barbara Chase and Kathryn Brozek and his brother Patrick Clifford. He graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Ct and Providence College in 1941. He was a decorated U. S. Navy fighter pilot in World War II flying off the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid and received numerous citations for bravery including two Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was president of the Clifford, Bang and Loos Insurance Agency in Hamden, Ct for 35 years until retirement. He was a long time communicant of St. Margaret's Parish in Madison. He was a loyal fan of the Providence College basketball team and the Boston Red Sox and was an avid golfer at the Madison Country Club for approximately 48 years. He cherished the moments with friends and family and will be remembered, loved, and missed by many.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Margaret's Church, Madison on Thursday, June 27th at 10 am. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in Westside Cemetery, Madison. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, June 26 from 4 to 7 at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made in the memory of "James Clifford '41" to the Friar Forever Fund, Providence College, 1 Cunningham Square, Providence, R.I. 02918.
