Doris Suzanne McGriff of Guilford died Thursday, December 4, 2014 at CT Hospice, Branford, with her loved ones at her side. She was born at home in Marion, IN on May 2, 1929 to the late John Curtis and Bernice Evans McGriff. She was predeceased by her sister Margaret Ellen Tuttle of Marion, IN and niece Suzanne Rezabek of Warren, OH. She is survived by her loving partner of 36 years, Carol Beth Milliron, her sister Donna Rinaldi of Concord, OH, niece Diane (Michael) Williams of Ravenna, OH, nephews Randall (Brenda) Tuttle of Davisburg, MN, Steven (Bonnie) Tuttle of Swayzee, IN, six great nieces and nephews and eleven great great nieces and nephews. Doris Suzanne graduated from Ball State University in 1950 with a BSN and worked as a nurse for 45 years. She worked many years at the University of Colorado Medical Center as a Medical Supervisor and in the Nursing Education Dept. Doris and Beth moved to Guilford in 1981. Doris retired from Yale New Haven Hospital in 1993 after working as a dermatology nurse. While there she developed and ran a support group for Dermatology Cancer patients. Doris Suzanne was a great lover of life and enjoyed many things. Favorites were fishing and camping in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Metropolitan Opera Performances, UCONN Huskies basketball and the WNBA. She played semi-professional basketball in IN. She enjoyed playing card games and she always expected to win, which she usually did saying of course. She loved growing hybrid tea roses, the southwest, especially Taos and Santa Fe, NM and times spent on Nantucket. She dearly loved her Church family and was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Guilford for 24 years. She served as a Deacon for 6 years and worked on various committees and sang in the Church Choir. Doris Suzanne will be greatly missed for her honesty and integrity, her wonderful wit and humor, her calm confident approach to life and most of all for her great ability to love unconditionally, her family, her friends, birds and kitties.
Memorial Services will be held in First Congregational Church, 122 Broad St, Guilford on Friday, December 19, at 2 pm. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, 122 Broad St, Guilford, CT 064374 or the American Heart Assoc, 5 Brookside Dr, Wallingford, CT 06492.
