Mr. Lawrence A. LoomisLawrence A. Loomis of Lubec, Maine died on Friday, March 29, 2013 in Maine. He was born in West Haven Connecticut, March 26, 1931 the son of Thomas J. Loomis and Loretta Lessard Loomis. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife of forty two years, Joan C. Loomis and his brother Thomas J. Loomis. He is survived by his partner and companion, Jane K. Dore' of Lubec Maine. He is the beloved father of Lawrence A. Loomis Jr. and grandchildren Steven, Shannon and Colleen Loomis of Las Vegas, Nevada; his daughter, Theresa F. Loomis of Guilford, Connecticut and his former son in law, Jay Metzler of Guilford, Connecticut; his daughter Kathleen Loomis, her husband Carl Fonicello and grandchildren Elyssa and Kian Fonicello of Wake Forest, North Carolina; his daughter Elaine A. Riley and her husband John Riley and grandchildren Kellyn, Erika and Connor Riley of Stony Brook, New York. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1949, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and his commission in the United States Army. He later earned a master’s degree from Fairfield University. He spent two years on active duty with the U. S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. He was also a member of US Army Reserve in Connecticut. After finishing active duty with the U.S. Army, Mr. Loomis was employed as an Assistant Manager by The William H. Meranda Company, a labor recruiting firm in Miami. Florida. However, He spent most of his life in Guilford, Connecticut prior to moving to Maine in 2001. He was employed at Yale-New Hospital for 28 years and held the positions of Employment Manager, Building Services Supervisor, Director of Transportation Aides & Communication and Director of Organization and Employee Development. Upon his departure from Yale-New Haven he formed Loomis Associates and provided training and consulting services to hospitals, including Yale-New Haven. In other career changes he was a registered securities and life insurance broker and was a financial planner with IDS/American Express and later with MDS Securities which operated from the former Shawmut Bank. He was also courier with the Gardella Company. For many years he taught communication skills courses as a part time instructor. He was employed in this capacity from time to time at The University of Hartford, The University of New Haven, Quinnipiac College and Teiyko Post University. He was a member of the Communication Department Adjunct Faculty at Central Connecticut State University and taught part time there for nineteen years. He was a past president of The Southern Connecticut Chapter of The American Society for Training and Development, The Guilford Lakes Improvement Association, and the Guilford Elementary School Parent Teachers Association. He also served as Treasurer of The Guilford Scholarship Association, was a past member of The Council of Health Manpower of The Connecticut Hospital Association, The Advisory Board of Fairfield University's Bureau of Business and Public Administration, The Madison Lions Club, The Guilford Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Westbrook Elks, The Saint George Church Advisory Council and the Saint George Cemetery Committee. In Lubec, Maine, he was a member of The Flatiron Corner Improvement Committee and served as Treasurer of The Lubec Memorial Library. At the time of his passing he was a partner with his companion Jane K. Dore' in the Dore' Loomis LLC, a small real estate development company. Funeral services will be held at the Guilford Funeral Home in Guilford, Connecticut on Saturday, April 13 at 10am. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery, Hubbard Rd, Guilford. A memorial service will be held at The Sacred Heart Church in Lubec, Maine at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Food Pantry C/O William Sawtelle, 340 US Route One, Dennisville, Maine 04628.
