Ms. Nancy H. Banning [11/27/1945 - 12/29/2014]

Ms. Nancy H. BanningNancy Banning passed away peacefully early morning on Dec 29, 2014. Nancy was born in Auburn, NY on November 27th, 1945 to Leland and Bernice Hares. She is survived by her loving partner of 18 years, Phyllis Beno, her son Jason Banning, former husband Walker Banning, brother Ed Hares, and several nieces and nephews in Florida, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. Nancy grew up in Skaneateles, NY and attended Skaneateles High School. After graduating from Syracuse University with a degree in Geography, she worked for a regional planning agency in Rochester, NY. She also attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass where she was a parks planner. Nancy was very entrepreneurial, having established Banning Realty in Weedsport, NY and she was successful as both a Real Estate Broker and Associate. Nancy moved to Tallahassee, Florida with her former husband Walker and her son Jason in 1985. She worked for the Department of Natural Resources and continued her Real Estate Profession as a broker in Florida, working for various Real Estate firms in Tallahassee until 1996. She then moved to Guilford, CT and continued her Real Estate career as a Broker for various firms in Guilford and Madison, CT until 2013. Outside of her professional career, Nancy was an avid lover of nature and enjoyed teaching others, regardless of how young or how old, about general facts of life, the wilderness, and gardening. In her youth she was highly involved with community, was a Girl Scout councilor, active with 4H, and was an intern with the National Park Service in Washington DC where one of her assignments involved the Kennedy Memorial. She also had Peace Corps training in South Dakota on the Sioux reservation. Nancy found her peace when knee-deep in water around the shorelines of both Florida and Connecticut, fishing and gathering various shellfish. She was an avid gardener and was a big influence on others. She was a person of great courage, believer in self-reliance and personal growth, the American value of hard-work, goal-setting and attainment and enjoyed the company of others. Her impact is felt by many and she will be dearly missed by family and friends around the country. Nancy’s son and partner would like to express gratitude to the nursing staff at Yale New Haven/Smilow Cancer Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 3pm Friday, January 2nd at the First Congregational Church of Guilford, CT at 122 Broad Street on the Green.
